AfroJazz with Sonya is an “All Levels” heel experience that incorporates beginners movement from Sub-Saharan African countries in combination with rhythmic jazz, modern, and heel choreography. The AfroJazz experience incorporates a full body regimen set to relieve stress, build strength/fitness techniques, and provide a unique and fun way to stay active and healthy.

Meet the CEO

Sonya Osei was born and raised in Prince George's County, MD. Her family is originally from Kumasi, Ghana located in West Africa. Sonya is the youngest of five, and began her dance career at the age of four years old while performing Adowa, a traditional Ghanaian dance throughout the DMV Metropolitan area for events and private engagements. While forming her love for dance, Sonya joined numerous dance teams and troupes to receive formal technical training. Upon entering high school at Charles H. Flowers High School, Sonya focused on training in ballet, modern, jazz, african dance, and hip-hop. Training and exposure in the arts encouraged Sonya to express her creativity, choreography, and interest in leadership.

While an undergraduate student at Bowie State University, Sonya joined the Symphony of Soul Marching band as a dancer for the Dancing Divas Auxiliary Danceline. Transitioning into leadership after 2.5 years, Sonya focused on teaching and empowering current members on fitness and expressing themselves creatively through dance. Sonya continued to train in the styles of jazz, modern, ballet, and African dance.

In 2018, Sonya began to perform as a backup dancer for Ms. Riley Knoxx, #1 Top Beyonce' Impersonator in the world. During her time with Riley, Sonya began her brand AfroJazz with Sonya (2019). AfroJazz with Sonya encourages women to express themselves through the art of dance fitness by incorporating african, jazz, modern, and heel movement into combination choreography. Sonya caters her classes to all shapes, sizes, and ethnicities. Sonya has over 15 years of dance experience, ranging from choreographing music videos, performance pieces, and other personal engagements.
